2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Central completed the 2015 season with a 5-6 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 3A region three, the Cougars earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Central's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to T.R. Miller by a score of 67-16. The Cougars won as many games as in any season since 2007. The 328 points scored by the Cougars last year were a team record in a single season. It marked the first time since the 2000 season that the Cougars qualified for the playoffs. The Cougars last playoff victory came during the 2000 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Central struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 38.0 points a game. Since 2010, the Central football program has struggled with a record of 14-47. Over the past 25 seasons, Central has not won much with a record of 71-183. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 56th in Class 3A and 355th in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2007. The Cougars are led by head coach Barry Simmons who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 5-6 record in his first season at Central. The Cougars saw improvement from a 1-9 record the season before coach Simmons arrived. Under his direction the Cougars have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Simmons. Coach Simmons' overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 5-6 (45.5%). The Central Cougars will play in Class 3A region three during the 2016 season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Cougars could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season. Quarterback Raymond Graham returns for his senior season after rushing for 1,224 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior last season. He also threw for 1,098 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Cougars open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Catholic Montgomery on Friday, August 19 at Catholic Field. Last year the Catholic Montgomery Knights finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 4A region two. Central and Catholic Montgomery have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 0-2-0 record against the Knights.
